BES Heat Exchanger

Technical Specifications of BES Heat Exchanger
(Per TEMA Naming Convention)

The BES Heat Exchanger is a fixed tube sheet heat exchanger with a packed floating head under the TEMA standard. Its naming convention and core parameters are as follows:

1. TEMA Naming Convention Breakdown

BES consists of three letters, each representing a key design feature:

  • o B: Front Head Type (B = removable channel cover for tube-side maintenance).
  • o E: Shell Type (E = single-pass standard shell).
  • o S: Rear Head Type (S = externally sealed packed floating head).

Note: The main difference between BES and BEM lies in the rear head type (S = packed floating head, M = fixed tube sheet).

Example Model: BES-600-150-4/2-1

  • o 600: Shell diameter (mm)
  • o 150: Heat transfer area (m²)
  • o 4/2: Tube-side/shell-side design pressure (MPa)
  • o1: Number of tube passes

2. Key Technical Parameters (TEMA BES Standard)

Parameter Typical Value/Range TEMA Requirements
Design Standard ASME VIII Div.1 + TEMA BES Complies with TEMA Class R/C
Heat Transfer Area 10~800 m² Max 600 m² for tubes ≤9m
Design Pressure (Shell/Tube Side) 0.6~4.0 Mpa (6~40 bar) Special calculation for high-pressure models
Design Temperature -20°C to +300°C Special materials required >300°C
Shell Diameter DN150~DN1000 Reinforcement needed for shells >1m
Tube Bundle Parameters
- Tube OD Φ19.05 mm (3/4") / Φ25.4 mm (1") TEMA-recommended sizes
- Tube Length 1.5m / 3m / 6m / 9m Length-to-diameter ratio ≤8:1
- Tube Layout Angle 30° / 45° / 90° Triangular or square pitch
Tube Sheet Thickness 50~200 mm Calculated based on pressure and diameter
Packing Seal Graphite/PTFE/metallic spiral wound gasket Leakage rate <0.1%
Baffle Type Single segmental (20%~35% cut) Baffle spacing ≥1/5 shell diameter
Nozzle Flanges ANSI 150~600 / DIN PN10~40 Flange spacing ≥1.2×tube OD

3. Key Structural Features

1.Packed Floating Head Design (S-Type):

  • o Uses a packing gland seal at the rear end to allow tube bundle expansion and compensate for thermal stress.
  • o Suitable for shell-tube ΔT >50°C.

2.Removable Front Channel Cover (B-Type):

  • o Bolted cover allows tube-side maintenance and individual tube replacement.

3.Single-Pass Shell (E-Type):

  • o Standard shell design with optimized baffle arrangement.

4. Typical Applications

  • o Chemical Processes: Moderate ΔT applications (ΔT=50~100°C).
  • o Oil Refining: Crude oil preheating, solvent heat exchange.
  • o HVAC Systems: District heating systems.
  • o Food/Pharma: Heating/cooling of low-viscosity fluids.

5. Selection Limitations & Notes

1.Packing Maintenance:

  • o The packing gland requires regular inspection and replacement (recommended every 1–2 years).

2.Pressure Limitation:

  • o Design pressure typically ≤4.0 Mpa; higher pressures require enhanced sealing structures.

3.Fluid Compatibility:

  • o Packing material must be compatible with the fluid (e.g., graphite for high temperatures, PTFE for corrosion resistance).

6. Comparison with Other TEMA Types

Model Front Head Shell Type Rear Head Best For
BES Removable (B) Single-pass (E) Packed floating head (S) Moderate ΔT + thermal expansion compensation
BEM Removable (B) Single-pass (E) Fixed tube sheet (M) Clean fluids + small ΔT
AES Removable (A) Single-pass (E) Packed floating head (S) High-pressure + cleanable
Note: The BES exchanger solves thermal stress issues through its packed floating head, offering more flexibility than BEM but requiring regular seal maintenance.
